Section 56-3-47 - Protective Equipment and Clothing
47.1. Eye protection.
47.1.1. Welders and helpers shall use adequate shields or goggles to protect their eyes.
47.1.2. All employees shall have approved goggles or shields and use the same where there is a hazard from flying particles, or other eye hazards.
47.2. Clothing.
47.2.1. Employees engaged in haulage operations and all other persons employed around moving equipment shall wear snug-fitting clothing.
47.2.2. Protective gloves shall be worn when material which may injure hands is handled.
47.2.3. Gloves with gauntleted cuffs shall not be worn around moving equipment.
47.3. Safety hats and safety toed shoes.
47.3.1. Safety hats and safety toed shoes shall be worn by all persons while in or around tipples or cleaning plants.
47.3.2. Safety toed shoes shall be worn by all persons while in or around a surface mine tipple or cleaning plant.
47.3.3. All surface mine employees shall be required to wear safety helmets when working in areas where there is a possible danger of head injury from impact, or from falling or flying objects, or from electrical shock and burns: Provided,
47.3.3.a. Employees shall not be required to wear a safety helmet while operating machinery equipped with a falling object protective structure which satisfies the impact and penetration requirements established by the American National Standards Institute, Safety Requirements for Industrial Head protection. Standard Z89.1, unless the director finds that the dangers set forth herein may be present. Provided, however,
47.3.3.b. Employees shall be required to wear safety helmets while not operating said equipment subject to the preceding subsection, including periods of travel to and from such equipment.
47.3.4. The safety helmets required in this subsection shall meet the specifications for such helmets as prescribed by the mine health and safety administration.
47.4. Life jackets and belts.
47.4.1. Persons shall wear safety belts and lifelines where there is a danger of falling.
47.4.2. A person shall continuously tend the lifeline when bins, tanks, auger holes, or other dangerous areas are entered.
47.4.3. Life jackets or belts shall be worn where there is a danger from falling into water.
