§ 987. Cooperatives and cattlemen associations

When a municipality cannot or does not want to avail itself of the benefits of this chapter and it thus states through an ordinance, the Secretary of Agriculture may promote the construction of slaughterhouses among cooperative and cattlemen associations which match funds pursuant to the provision of § 983 of this title, and to appropriate the following contributions:

(1) Up to fifty percent (50%) of the total cost of the construction, enlargement or improvement of the slaughterhouse and the basic equipment necessary for an efficient operation.

(2) Up to fifty percent (50%) of the cost of the refrigerator cars needed initially for the transportation of meat from the slaughterhouse to the markets.

(3) Up to fifty percent (50%) of the cost of lands and other facilities for the operation of animal gathering centers according to the needs of the slaughterhouse.

(4) Salary of the slaughterhouse manager, up to a maximum of two (2) years, if appointed in accordance with the analogous criteria of subsection (5) of § 986 of this title, as applicable.
