§ 1240. Photographic reproductions—Microfilming General Registry of Vital Statistics

In the same manner as stated in § 1239 of this title, he may make copies of all birth, marriage, and death certificates or registrations entered in the General Registry of Vital Statistics of Puerto Rico, as well as of the affidavits and other documents which may have been presented for making such registrations.

The Secretary is hereby empowered to contract with any organization, society, agency or corporation duly authorized to operate as such, to copy on photographic film, through the process known as microfilming, the birth, death and marriage certificates registered in the books of the old Civil Registry of Puerto Rico; as well as the birth, death or marriage certificates registered in the General Registry of Vital Statistics of Puerto Rico.

When the contracts authorized by §§ 1239—1244 of this title are executed, the Secretary of the Department of Health or his/her representative shall guarantee the integrity and confidentiality of the birth, death and marriage certificates, as well as the registration of the birth of a child who is later adopted, and the documents that attest to the adoption, as provided by §§ 1239—1244 of this title. A violation of the provisions of this contract with regard to the confidentiality of said documentation shall entail the cancellation of the contract and the return of the copies obtained thereby to the Secretary of the Department of Health of Puerto Rico or his/her representative. The process of microfilming all of these documents shall be coordinated with the General Archives of Puerto Rico.
