§ 544v. Professional competence

(a) To ensure that a patient is properly examined by an optometrist or certified optometrist, he or she shall perform any tests deemed necessary to guarantee the visual welfare of the patient.

(b) The initial evaluation for the use of contact lenses shall also include:

(1) Keratometry.

(2) Measurement of corneal diameter.

(3) Silt lamp bio-microscopy.

(c) All prescriptions for eyeglasses must include the name, surname(s), license or certificate number of the doctor in block letters, name and address of the patient, date, far and near dioptric correction for each eye, pupillary distance, additional information on the type of lens recommended, special tints or treatments, and the signature of the optometrist or certified optometrist.

(d) An optometrist or certified optometrist may not perform any technique, function or manner of treatment for which he or she cannot attest to his/her professional competence, which must be acquired through formal education, supervised training and experience in continuing education programs.
