§ 5053. Natural and Environmental Resources and Environmental Quality and Health Educational Term

(a) The period comprised between the first day of May up to and including June 5 of each year is hereby designated as the “Natural Resources and Environmental Quality and Health Educational Term” throughout the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

(b) The Governor of Puerto Rico, by means of a proclamation to that effect each year, shall exhort all the public and private entities and all the People of Puerto Rico, to offer their cooperation in celebrating this period and join together in all those activities which tend to awaken community awareness of the importance and need to conserve and rationally use our natural resources, and maintain and improve the quality and health of the environment.

(c) The Department of Natural and Environmental Resources, the Environmental Quality Board and the Department of Education are hereby directed to adopt all the necessary measures to comply with all the purposes of this section and to determine the organization and holding of appropriate special activities leading to disseminate its significance and to emphasize the importance of preserving our natural resources and maintaining the purity of the environment, as well as stimulating the citizenry to become aware of and concerned with environmental problems, and motivate them to assume their share of responsibility in this effort.

The abovementioned government bodies shall invite all public agencies, private entities, associations and individuals they deem convenient, to join in organizing and observing the “Natural Resources and Environmental Quality Educational Season”. All government agencies shall offer their utmost cooperation for the activities that shall take place during this period.

The Department of Natural and Environmental Resources, the Environmental Quality Board, the Department of Health and the Department of Education shall designate a Committee, as they may determine, no later than January 30 of each calendar year, which shall be in charge of the organization, coordination and supervision of the activities that will be held during the period established by this section. Said Committee may designate a board of directors and establish any other method of organization deemed convenient to achieve an optimum effectiveness of the activities to be held.
