Section 67-11-03.5-04 - Requirements for secondary generalist title I teacher

A teacher who instructs students in a secondary school setting in any content subject in which reading is a required skill may obtain a credential to instruct students. To obtain a credential to instruct students in a secondary school setting who have failed to benefit from regular classroom instruction in any content subject where reading is a required skill a teacher must:

1. Hold a bachelor's degree or endorsement in secondary education as prescribed by the education standards and practices board;
2. Hold a valid North Dakota educator's professional license in the area of English, social studies, or science; and
3. Complete a minimum of six semester hours of the required coursework, including a minimum of two semester hours in any three of the following course areas:
a. Foundations or survey of reading;
b. Reading in the secondary school;
c. Diagnosis and correction of reading disabilities;
d. Clinical or laboratory practicum in reading with secondary students;
e. Research and the literature in reading or language arts;
f. Exceptional child;
g. Curriculum development;
h. English education methods; or
i. Reading in the content areas.
