Section 2:8-4.7 - Handling of poultry(a) Birds shall be caught, carried and removed in a manner that minimizes injury to the bird.(b) All doors and openings through which birds are moved shall be large enough to provide passage of birds without injury to the bird.(c) Catching and transport protocols shall minimize the number of times a bird is handled between capture and re-housing or slaughter.(d) The time between capture and slaughter shall be minimized to the extent possible consistent with food safety considerations.(e) The NJDA adopts and incorporates by reference the acceptable methods of beak trimming, catching and transport of laying hens as set forth in the United Egg Producers Animal Husbandry Guidelines for U.S. Egg Laying Flocks (2008 edition), available at http://www.azda.gov/ASD/UEP-Animal-Welfare-Guidelines.pdf when performed by a knowledgeable individual.(f) Beak trimming, toe trimming and dubbing may be performed by a knowledgeable individual as recommended in the Guide for the Care and Use of Agricultural Animals in Research and Teaching, Federation of Animal Science Societies, third edition, 2010 and described in the Handbook of Livestock Management, Battaglia, fourth edition, 2007, with such recommendations and descriptions adopted and incorporated by reference.N.J.
