All charter schools in Iowa are a part of the state's program of public education. Charter schools established on or after July 1, 2021, are subject to Iowa Code chapter 256E and Division I of this chapter. Charter schools established prior to July 1, 2021, continue to operate under and are subject to the provisions of Iowa Code chapter 256F and Division II of this chapter. The department monitors the effectiveness of charter schools and implements the applicable provisions of this chapter.
