Unless otherwise herein provided, all notices, petitions, and rules shall be served upon counsel for the parties interested or upon the parties themselves in the manner bills in equity are served, or upon the owner by leaving a copy with the party in possession of the real estate, or, in default of service in any of the methods stated, then in such manner as the court shall direct.
