§ 1079. Medal of Valor

Every year medals shall be awarded to the members of the Municipal Police and citizens who excel for acts of valor during the preceding year or when a police officer falls in the line of duty. The highest awards shall consist of gold medals, other medals shall be of silver, but shall be considered equal in merit. The winners shall be elected by a Commission composed of the mayor or his/her representative and the Municipal Police Commissioner. The mayor or his/her representative shall preside over the Commission. The municipalities shall regulate the process and the criteria for awarding the Medal of Valor. After examining the record and performance of the submitted candidates, the Commission shall award the medals. The medals shall be awarded on May 19 of every year on the occasion of the celebration of the Municipal Police Day.
