§ 3102. Definitions

For the purposes of this chapter, the following terms shall have the meaning stated hereinbelow, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise:

(a) Audiology. — The discipline which comprises the prevention, evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of auditory problems which impede verbal communication.

(b) Audiologist. — The person who makes the differential diagnosis of auditory problems, hearing aids tests and the dispensing (selection, adjustment and sale) of the same; provides training in the use of amplification, and participates in training or rehabilitation programs for persons with auditory impediments.

Furthermore, he participates in hearing conservation and environmental noise control programs and carries out supervisory functions.

(c) Revalidation examination. — The classifying examination which measures the level of cognitive competence, aptitude and skills to practice the professions of speech-language pathology, audiology and speech-language therapy in Puerto Rico. Said examination is one of the requirements to obtain a license as speech-language pathologist, audiologist and speech-language therapist in Puerto Rico.

(d) Board. — The Board of Examiners of Speech-Language Pathologists, Audiologists and Speech-Language Therapists of Puerto Rico.

(e) Speech-language pathology. — The discipline which comprises the prevention, evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of disorders of articulation, voice, fluency, comprehension or production of the language, whether spoken or written.

(f) Speech-language pathologist. — The person who prevents, evaluates, diagnoses, guides and participates in training or rehabilitation programs for persons with problems in articulation, voice, fluency, formulation or understanding of the spoken as well as written language and also performs supervisory functions.

(g) Speech-language therapist. — The professional who under the direction and close supervision of a speech-language pathologist carries out activities delegated by the latter related to speech-language pathology.

(h) License. — Any document duly issued by the Board in which it is certified that the person in whose behalf it has been issued is a professional authorized to practice the corresponding discipline, according to the requirements set forth in this chapter.

(i) Recertification. — Shall mean the procedure provided for health professionals in §§ 3001 et seq. of Title 24.
