§ 138. Puerto Rico Housing Authority—Powers and duties

As soon as the Puerto Rico Housing Authority shall deem it advisable and pertinent, and as sufficient funds therefor are appropriated, it shall proceed to eliminate the zones declared “slum districts” through voluntary purchase or condemnation of the land, dwellings, or other unsanitary and unsafe structures included within said zones for the purpose of demolishing said structures, and for improving or removing them to other residential districts or projects of the Authority itself, according to the regulations of the Puerto Rico Housing Authority; Provided, That when the “slum district” is located in a municipality where a municipal housing authority has been organized and is operating, the Puerto Rico Housing Authority shall remove the houses which may be improved, to housing developments constructed for said purposes, and said houses shall be leased in the same manner and under the terms which the Puerto Rico Housing Authority may direct.
