§ 5254. Manatee Protection Awareness Day

(a) November 4 is hereby declared “Manatee Protection Awareness Day”.

(b) The Governor of Puerto Rico shall, through a proclamation, encourage the People of Puerto Rico to observe November 4 of each year as “Manatee Protection Awareness Day”.

(c) The Department of Natural Resources shall adopt the necessary measures to comply with the provisions of this section by organizing and holding activities to educate citizens on how to protect this endangered species.

(d) The West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus) is hereby designated as the official mammal of Puerto Rico, thus establishing as public policy of the Government of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico the priority of assertively and zealously overseeing its protection and promoting, fostering, and supporting those measures that ensure their conservation around the Puerto Rican archipelago.”
