§ 5031. Special license plates—Mayors and municipal legislators

By request of any mayor or a member of a municipal legislature, the Secretary shall issue special license plates to them, provided they have been duly certified as such by the Commonwealth Election Commission, and have taken office. Said license plates may be used in addition to the official motor vehicles license plates, subject to the following conditions:

(a) The information needed to identify the special license plates in the corresponding official registration of the motor vehicles shall be included in the motor vehicle and trailer registry.

(b) A twenty-dollar ($20) internal revenue voucher shall be cancelled for the issue of said special license plates, which amount shall be deposited in the DISCO Fund to defray the cost of producing said license plates.

(c) The use of said special license plate on the public roads of Puerto Rico is only authorized during the effective term of the official license plate and while the concerned party continues in office.

(d) Every mayor or municipal legislator who ceases his/her functions as such for any reason shall be entitled to keep the special license plate for mayors and municipal legislators that was issued to him/her by the Secretary.

(e) Any person who displays a special license plate as mayor or municipal legislator without authorization therefor shall incur a misdemeanor and upon conviction, shall be punished by a fine of not less than two hundred dollars ($200) nor of more than five hundred dollars ($500).
