(a) The Legislature of Puerto Rico recognizes that the geological formations of the karst region in northeast Puerto Rico constitute a unique and essential area for the maintenance of the aquifers and springs, which are the main sources of drinking water for a large part of Puerto Rico. Consequently, it is essential to preserve these resources and their natural and environmental attributes, typical of this region, from the possible threat of destruction due to unrestricted development and extractions from the earth’s crust. The Tanamá River Karst Zone National Park, hereinafter “the Park”, is hereby established with the purpose of implementing the public policy of preserving and conserving certain zones that have natural resources of majestic scenery and ecological importance, such as the mountains and the river in the karst zone located in Utuado, Hatillo and Arecibo for the benefit, use and enjoyment of present and future generations.
(b) The Tanamá River Karst Zone National Park is hereby designated, which shall consist of the existing lands and bodies of water that the National Parks Company delimits as the designated area. For such purposes, the National Parks Company shall prepare a map of the designated area, which shall be available to the public for inspection.
