§ 1502. Definitions

For the purposes of this chapter, the following terms shall have the meaning stated below:

(a) Puerto Rico or the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. — Comprises the entire area within the geographical or territorial boundaries under its jurisdiction.

(b) Person. — Any individual or juridical entity, corporate group, association, public and private corporations, including municipalities, agencies and instrumentalities of the Government of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

(c) Coastal waters. — All navigable or nonnavigable bodies of water that are outside of the baseline that defines the land boundaries of Puerto Rico and its adjacent islands, which are under the jurisdiction of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

(d) Inland waters. — All navigable or nonnavigable bodies of water found within the baselines that define the land boundaries of Puerto Rico and its adjacent islands.

(e) Council. — The Council for the Conservation and Study of Underwater Archaeological Sites and Resources, created hereby.

(f) Institute. — The Institute of Puerto Rican Culture created by §§ 1195 et seq. of this title.

(g) Underwater archaeological sites and resources. — Includes any artifact, evidence of historical settlements, ships or other shipwrecked vessels and any parts or debris thereof; ruins of human habitation, and any object or thing related to the history, government or culture of Puerto Rico found in the waters under the jurisdiction of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

(h) Shipwreck. — Any ship, boat or other navigation vessel which has sunk in waters under the jurisdiction of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, which occurred over fifty (50) years ago.

(i) Miles. — All references are to nautical miles.
