§ 684. Exemption of payment of registration fees for persons who have been awarded the Purple Heart

(a) For the purposes of this section, the “Purple Heart Medal” means the medal awarded in the name of the President of the United States to those persons who have been killed or wounded while serving in the armed forces of the United States after April 5, 1917.

(b) Beginning [in] the 2007-2008 Academic Year, the University of Puerto Rico and its university campuses shall exempt from the payment corresponding to the registration fees all those persons who have been awarded a Purple Heart military medal and who furthermore:

(1) Have been admitted to one of the units of the University of Puerto Rico System to take full time, part time or summer courses leading to a university degree.

(2) Are residents of Puerto Rico when applying for admission to the University as well as having been residents of Puerto Rico when joining the armed forces of the United States.

(3) Have submitted documents as evidence of having received the required decoration.

(4) Have exhausted the federal study aids or are unable to avail themselves of said benefit and do not qualify for the benefits of Section 4B(h) of Act No. 13 of October 2, 1980, as amended, known as the “Veterans’ Bill of Rights”.

(c) The University of Puerto Rico is authorized to adopt any regulations needed to implement this section.
