The board of directors of such district may forthwith proceed to remedy such defective and unsafe conditions; and they are hereby authorized and empowered to take all necessary steps to remedy such conditions and pay therefor out of the funds derived from the bond issue as hereinafter provided: Provided, however, That nothing herein contained shall be construed to change or modify the existing statutes with reference to the specific uses for which the general fund of the district may be expended.
