A fund member who is hired for the first time before January 1, 1990, may choose to be covered by sections 12.5 and 13.5 of this chapter (instead of section 13.3 of this chapter) if the fund member files an election with the system board before January 1, 1991. However, an election may not be filed after the fund member has a covered impairment. An election filed under this section is irrevocable.
