Section 45-5-73.01 - Establishment and election of chair; term, duties, and compensation(a)(1) The position of Chair of the Blount County Commission is established. The first chair shall be elected on a countywide basis at the general election in 2024 following a primary election, if applicable, at the same time and in the same manner as any primary election for members of the county commission. The chair shall take office at the same time members of the county commission take office following their election. After the election and swearing in of the first chair after the effective date of this act, the judge of probate shall no longer serve as chair of the commission.(2) The chair shall serve a term of six years commencing at the same time as the term of members of the county commission provided by general law. Successor chairs shall be elected in the same manner at the general election every six years thereafter and shall commence his or her term in the same manner. The chair shall serve until a successor is elected and qualified.(b) The Chair of the Blount County Commission shall be a resident and qualified elector of the county for at least one year prior to the date on which he or she would take office.(c) The salary of the Chair of the Blount County Commission shall be the same as the base salary of the Blount County Revenue Commissioner payable in the same manner as the salary of the revenue commissioner.(d) The chair shall preside over meetings of the county commission and shall vote only in the case of a tie vote of the district commissioners.(e) In addition to the other duties and responsibilities of the chair, the Chair of the Blount County Commission shall do all of the following, as provided by law: (1) Promote economic development in the county.(2) Establish and enhance intergovernmental partnerships.(3) Serve as the representative of Blount County and the Blount County Commission on any boards, committees, or other organizations that require representation of the chair of the county commission.(4) Perform any other duties as determined by a majority vote of the county commission.(f) This act shall not be construed to affect the salary of the judge of probate during the term for which he or she is elected or appointed.Ala.
