Section 51-13 - Non-Salmonid Fish Hatcheries

(a) Broodstock Development. All brood fish received by a fish hatchery shall originate from a Department authorized aquaculture facility and shall be inspected by Department personnel before release into hatchery waters. A minimum of three (3) working days prior to brood stock arrival, the owner or operator shall notify the Chief of Fisheries to schedule an inspection of the brood fish.

  • (i) The number of brood fish authorized to be received by a fish hatchery shall be determined by the Department on a case-by-case basis.
  • (ii) Fathead minnows (Pimphales promelas) shall only be received as adult fish from a Department approved hatchery.

(b) Commercially Produced Live Baitfish. Adult fathead minnows may be received for sale from an approved fish hatchery provided that the recipient fish hatchery has written authorization from the Chief of Fisheries.

(c) The Chief of Fisheries shall be notified immediately by the fish hatchery owner or operator if a shipment contains any other fish species, vegetation or other organisms. The shipment of concern shall be quarantined and held at the aquaculture facility until final disposition is determined following inspection by the Department.
