To provide a chemical dependency treatment unit as a separate unit in a Mental Health Hospital Facility, the service must be devoted exclusively to the care and treatment of alcohol and/or drug dependency patients. The unit must be under the care of physician(s) qualified in addictionology (the diagnosis and treatment of alcoholism and drug addiction). Other professional personnel utilized in direct patient care should also be qualified in the diagnosis and treatment of chemical dependency. Facilities must be provided to offer protection for the patients and staff against any physical injury resulting from a patient becoming disturbed or violent. Adequate facilities and personnel must be provided for safe, medical detoxification and a procedure available so that a patient can be transferred to an intensive care unit should such care become necessary.
