Section 64:30:01:01 - DefinitionsTerms defined in SDCL 32-3-1 have the same meaning when used in this article. In addition, terms used in this article have the following meaning:
(1) "VIN," vehicle identification number;(2) "Original VIN," the number assigned to a vehicle by the manufacturer, consisting of numerals or letters or both and used primarily for registration and identification purposes;(3) "Replacement VIN," the vehicle's original VIN reproduced on a replacement identification number plate and attached to the vehicle;(4) "Assigned VIN," a number preassigned, imprinted, or embossed on a plate, and then attached to a vehicle that has no identifiable VIN or whose VIN has been destroyed or removed;(5) "Public VIN," a vehicle identification number located in a conspicuous location on a vehicle for easy access to law enforcement personnel and other interested parties;(6) "Secondary VIN," a vehicle identification number or a number derived from a vehicle identification number located in an area kept confidential for law enforcement use;(7) "VIN plate," unless otherwise stated in this article, the replacement identification number plate or assigned identification number plate;(8) "Front door pillar post," a post located forward of the front door and running between the door and windshield;(9) "Front door latch post," the post located at the trailing edge of the front door to which the door latches;(10) "State code," the two-character alphabetic code used by the U. S. postal service for abbreviations of states' names;(11) "Component," a vehicle part marked by the vehicle manufacturer with a unique identifiable number traceable to the vehicle through the manufacturer;(12) "Gross visual examination," an examination of a motor vehicle to determine if it is the vehicle described in the certificate of title last issued for that vehicle, consisting of either an examination of the entire motor vehicle or an examination of the vehicle identification numbers, or both.S.D.
