Section 20:04:27:13.07 - Requirements for administering furosemide (lasix)

Furosemide (lasix) must be administered intravenously by a veterinarian licensed by the commission and at a dose level not more than 500 mg. (10cc). The administration of furosemide (lasix) must be witnessed by the trainer or the trainer's agent.

Furosemide may not be administered less than four hours prior to post time for the race in which the horse is entered.

Any veterinarian who administers furosemide shall be prohibited from working as a private veterinarian at the race track unless specifically authorized to do so by the commission veterinarian.

The veterinarian who attended to the horse shall deliver to the commission veterinarian at least two hours prior to post time for the race for which the horse is entered the following information on a form provided by the commission:

(1) The name of the horse, racetrack name, the date and time the furosemide (lasix) was administered to the entered horse;
(2) The dosage amount of furosemide (lasix) administered to the entered horse; and
(3) The printed name and signature of the attending licensed veterinarian who administered the furosemide (lasix).
