Section 73-10 - Procedures for Collection of Legal Blood Samples1. Clean the venipuncture site with a non-alcoholic skin prep, soap and water is preferred. Remember that some antiseptic skin preps contain alcohol as a solvent.2. Withdraw seven (7) cc. of blood and place in the tube provided. These tubes have heparin as an anti-coagulant. Also place one-half ( 1/2 #) ounce or more of urine in plastic container. Be sure to label tube and plastic container with deceased's name.3. Cap the tube and mix well with the anti-coagulant.4. The Coroner is to sign the form on the line designated and the person who withdrew the sample(s) is to sign in the space provided.5. Blood, urine, and other samples are to be wrapped securely in cotton or paper (or other suitable material) and placed in the mailing container that is provided. Refrigerate, do not freeze if mailing is to be delayed.6. Mail or bring the sample(s) to SLED, Post Office Box 21398, Columbia, South Carolina 29221 and mark to the attention of the CHEMISTRY LABORATORY.
