B. Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL)

The time-weighted average concentration in air that shall not be exceeded during any 8-hour shift of a 40-hour work week.

C. The PELs were developed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to protect workers from "a wide variety of health effects that could cause material impairment of health or functional capacity. This includes protection against catastrophic effects such as cancer, cardiovascular, liver, and kidney damage; lung diseases, as well as more subtle effects resulting in central nervous system damage, narcosis, respiratory effects, and sensory irritation".
D. The Upper Concentration Limits for GB areas were calculated using the above algorithm and an air concentration Ca set equal to 10% of the Lower Explosive Limit (10% LEL) which is defined as ten percent (10%) of the concentration of a compound in air below which a flame will not propagate if the mixture is ignited.
