WHEREAS, the courage and determination of these women as well as those who have continued the struggle to make America the true land of opportunity should be recognized;

WHEREAS, the State serves an important role in educating our youth about the important contributions that these great American women have made and in inspiring all of our youth to embrace the opportunity to seek their own level of greatness; and

WHEREAS, private citizens of the State have informed me of their willingness to undertake service on behalf of these objectives, and their expertise, judgement, and professional and business acumen are invaluable assets;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE E. PATAKI, Governor of the State of New York, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and Laws of the State of New York, do hereby establish the Governor's Commission Honoring the Achievements of Women (the "commission") and the Governor's Steering Committee Honoring the Achievements of Women (the "steering committee"). The steering committee shall consist of the executive director of the commission, who shall be its chairperson, and such other members as shall be appointed by the Governor.

The commission, working in conjunction with the National Women's Hall of Fame of Seneca Falls, shall prepare and submit recommendations for:

(2) events to celebrate the Sesquicentennial of the Women's Rights Convention at Seneca Falls; and
(3) a study to determine the feasibility of establishing a permanent tribute to honor women's contributions to history.

The steering committee shall evaluate the recommendations submitted to it by the commission and shall, after consultation with the Governor, undertake programs, events and other activities to recognize, honor and celebrate the achievements of women. Such programs, events, and activities shall be carried out with the advice and assistance of the commission.
