WHEREAS, New York State is blessed with beautiful natural resources, a variety of cultural traditions and major cosmopolitan centers which are the result of the efforts of generations of citizens; and
WHEREAS, these blessings attract visitors and vacationers from all over the world, making New York State a major tourism center; and
WHEREAS, the tourism and travel industries comprise an important segment of the State's economy; and
WHEREAS, New York State, through the campaigns and programs of the Department of Commerce and of other State agencies and authorities, is appropriately dedicated to the preservation, enhancement and enjoyment of such attractions and to the promotion and development of the tourism and travel industries which serve the State's visitors and vacationers; and
WHEREAS, it is desirable to coordinate, to the maximum extent practicable, the State's policies and programs to ensure that they effectively attract and serve the State' s visitors and vacationers as well as address the economic development needs of the State's tourism and travel industries;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mario M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of New York, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the State of New York, do hereby establish the State Tourism Executive Committee.
The purposes of the State Tourism Executive Committee shall be to coordinate the development and implementation of the State's policies, programs, projects and strategies to enhance the State's attractiveness as a site for vacations, conventions and other visits, and to encourage the growth and quality of the travel and tourism industries in the State.
For the purposes in paragraph I of this Order, the State Tourism Executive Committee shall have the following powers:
The State Tourism Executive Committee shall comprise the Commissioner of Commerce who shall serve as chairman, the Director of the Budget, the Commissioner of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, the Commissioner of Transportation, the Chairman of the Council on the Arts, the Chairman of the State Thruway Authority, the Chairman of the Adirondack Park Agency, the Commissioner of Environmental Conservation, the Commissioner of Education, the Commissioner of Agriculture and Markets, and the Chairman of the Olympic Regional Development Authority.
The Executive Committee shall meet at the direction of the Chairman and shall periodically report to the Governor on its activities.
The Department of Commerce shall provide technical and staff support to the Executive Committee. All other departments, divisions and units of State government, including public corporations, are directed to cooperate with the Executive Committee and to provide such assistance as it may require to fulfill its purposes. Such assistance may include, but not be limited to, assistance of agency staff and the provision of such statistical and program data as the Executive Committee may require.
