Section 1.22 - Executive order no. 22: designating the interdepartmental traffic safety committee as the state agency to coordinate and approve state highway safety programs

By virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and Laws of the State of New York, I, Nelson A. Rockefeller, Governor of the State of New York, do hereby establish an Interdepartmental Committee, to be known as the Interdepartmental Traffic Safety Committee, to consist of the Secretary to the Governor, as chairman, and the Commissioners of Education, Health, Local Government, Mental Hygiene, Motor Vehicles, the Superintendents of State Police, and Insurance, the Chairman of the Public Service Commission, the Chairman of the New York State Thruway Authority, and the Superintendent of Public Works until August 31, 1967 and thereafter the Commissioner of Transportation, as members. The Chairman shall appoint annually a vice-chairman who shall perform the duties of Chairman in the Chairman's absence, or at such other time or times as the Chairman may direct.

I. General Powers.

The Committee shall coordinate the highway safety activities of state and local agencies, other public and private agencies, and of interested individuals and organizations, including the State Traffic Safety Council--New York. The Committee is hereby designated, pursuant to Article 16-A of the Executive Law, to act in my behalf in carrying out the provisions of that Article and, for this purpose, shall be vested with, and authorized to exercise and perform all of the functions, powers and duties prescribed in that Article.

II. Personnel.

The Committee shall appoint an Executive Director and shall assign to such Director such powers, functions and duties as it shall deem appropriate. The Committee may employ such additional personnel as it may deem necessary or desirable to fulfill the purposes of this Order and of Article 16-A of the Executive Law.

III. The Interdepartmental Committee on Highway Safety, established on May 16, 1959 as the successor to the Traffic Safety Policy Coordination Committee, is hereby abolished.
