Section 8C.08 - Rail Traffic Detection

03A When automatic flashing-light signals are installed, the length of time the flashing-light signals shall operate before arrival of any rail traffic at the grade crossing shall be a function of the minimum track clearance distance as follows: Where the minimum track clearance distance is 35 feet or less, the flashing-light signals shall operate for at least 20 seconds before the arrival of rail traffic at the crossing. Where the minimum track clearance distance is more than 35 feet, the flashing-light signal shall operate for at least 13 seconds plus one second for each 5 feet of clearance distance before the arrival of rail traffic at the crossing.

03B When automatic gates are installed, the length of time the flashing-light signals and gate arm lights shall operate before arrival of any rail traffic at the grade crossing shall be a function of the minimum track clearance distance as follows: Where the minimum track clearance distance is 35 feet or less, the flashing-light signals shall operate for at least 27 seconds before the arrival of rail traffic at the crossing. Where the minimum track clearance distance is more than 35 feet, the flashing-light signal shall operate for at least 20 seconds plus one second for each 5 feet of clearance distance before the arrival of rail traffic at the crossing.
