Section 150.11 - Landmark sign selection criteria
(a) The Department of Transportation will use the following criteria in determining whether a sign should be submitted to the United States Secretary of Transportation as a landmark sign:
(1) signs lawfully in existence as of October 22, 1965 are allowed to remain within controlled areas when located on farm structures or other natural surfaces and are of historical or artistic significance the preservation of which is consistent with 23 USC 131;
(2) reasonable maintenance, repair or restoration of this type sign is permitted in accordance with section 150.12 of this Part, but substantial change in size, lighting or message content will terminate its exempt status.
(b) No sign shall be classified as a landmark sign until such sign has been submitted by the Department of Transportation for approval by the United States Secretary of Transportation and such approval has been given.
