Section 56.7 - Width exemption
(a) Safety appurtenances include, but are not limited to rear view mirrors, turn signal lamps, hand holds, door handles, door latches, cables, chain binders, cable hooks, drip rails, awning rails, drip caps, rub rails, grab rails, electrical receptacles, pin pockets, bumper guards, window louvers, window frames, exhaust fans, lifting eyes, portable beds, load induced tire bulge, back-up beepers and safety sensor devices.
(b) Notwithstanding section 385 (1)(a) of the Vehicle and Traffic Law, a commercial vehicle or a bus, other than a school bus, may exceed 102 inches in width by up to 3 inches on either or both sides (6 inches total) if the extra width is caused by safety appurtenances.
(c) Notwithstanding section 385 (1)(d) of the Vehicle and Traffic Law, a school bus may exceed 98 inches in width by up to 3 inches on either or both sides (6 inches total) if the extra width is caused by safety appurtenances.
(d) If a city has acted under the authority of Vehicle and Traffic Law, section 385(1)(e), to limit the width of buses which operate wholly within such city, such local law shall supersede this regulation.
(e) Nothing contained herein shall be construed as allowing the main body of a commercial vehicle or a bus to exceed the width limits set for it in the Vehicle and Traffic Law.
