Section 53.6 - Identification requirements(a) Every brake lining sold, offered for sale or distributed in New York State must be identified to show the manufacturer, coefficient of friction classification, and the catalog or formulation designation of such brake lining.(b) Brake linings, whether in an unmounted or bulk supply form, mounted on brake shoes or pads or as brake blocks, shall be indelibly marked with good contrast on an external, noncontacting surface in letters not less than seven sixty-fourths (0.109375) inch in height where a lining is one-eighth (0.125) inch or greater in thickness, or no more than one-sixteenth (0.0625) inch less than the thickness of the lining where the lining thickness is less than one-eighth (0.125) inch, with numbers and code letters giving the name under which approved, the catalog or formulation number, and code letters indicating the coefficient of friction classification of the lining, in that order. The name shall be abbreviated by not less than two letters. The required identification shall be placed on every brake lining. The commissioner may, upon request, permit deviation from any of the requirements contained in this subdivision if he finds, in his discretion, that compliance with such requirements would be impracticable.(c) The commissioner upon request and under terms and conditions prescribed by him may permit the use of an identification code different from the identification requirements prescribed herein for brake linings manufactured in a foreign nation in which an identification code different from that prescribed herein has been adopted as a national system in the country in which such brake linings are manufactured.N.Y.
