Section 52.2 - Specifications and requirements

Such device must meet the following requirements:

(a) It must operate independently of the ignition switch.
(b) It must either operate independently of the turn signal unit, or if it is combined with that unit its method of operation must be different from that unit.
(c) It must be installed so that it uses the turn signal lights as the hazard warning lights.
(d) It must have a pilot indicator light which flashes only when the device is in use.
(e) A turn signal indicator having two separate pilot indicators may be used as the pilot hazard warning indicator, and this would not be considered as being contrary to the foregoing subdivision. Both indicators must flash simultaneously.
(f) In all other cases, a separate flashing indicator must be used, and it must be red in color and at least equivalent in size to a one-half inch diameter circle.
(g) The flasher must be able to flash at least two of the remaining bulbs if one or more bulbs fail.
(h) The flasher must be a variable load flasher or one which accomplishes the same function as a variable load flasher.
