Section 8:43G-25.3 - Post mortem patient services(a) Bodies and body parts in the morgue shall be kept refrigerated or in chemical fixation in a non-putrescent state.(b) The medical staff shall attempt to secure autopsies in cases of unusual deaths, deaths from unknown causes, and cases of medicolegal and educational interest, unless otherwise provided for by law.(c) Autopsies shall be performed only with the consent of the patient's family or guardian in accordance with 26:6-50. Consent shall not be required for medical examiner cases.(d) The hospital shall notify the county medical examiner or prosecutor immediately upon a patient's death when the circumstances of the death fall within the criteria specified in 52:17B-86 of the State Medical Examiners Act, 52:17B-78 et seq.N.J. Admin. Code § 8:43G-25.3
