Section 3A:55-9.12 - Solos (solitary activities)(a) The facility shall ensure that children freely consent to do a solo, defined as a camping experience where a child is living away from direct supervision of staff members, and shall not coerce or force the children to do a solo.(b) The facility shall: 1. Limit solos to a maximum of 72 hours;2. Ensure that children know the boundaries of the solo activity; and3. Advise children they are prohibited from making fires and from rock climbing.(c) The facility shall ensure that the children receive the following equipment:1. A whistle to signal for help;2. Shelter such as a tent or tarpaulin;3. Three liters of water a day;4. Food sufficient for three meals a day;6. At least one change of clothes appropriate for the weather.(d) The facility shall ensure that staff members:1. Communicate with the child at least twice a day by whistle, radio or other means to check on his or her safety and document all contacts in the shift log; and2. Are available to provide face-to-face contact and care immediately if a child requests attention from staff members.(e) The facility shall not allow children to do a solo in areas with bodies of water deeper than four feet or in areas having rivers or streams with a strong water current.N.J.
