Section Saf-C 1314.10 - Service Entrance(a) A school bus body may have a special service entrance constructed to accommodate a wheelchair lift for the loading and unloading of pupils.(b) The opening shall be at a convenient point on the right of the school bus and far enough to the rear to prevent the door(s), when open, from obstructing the right front regular entrance door, excluding a regular front entrance door lift.(c) The opening may extend below the floor through the bottom of the body skirt. In the event such an opening is used, reinforcements shall be installed at the front and rear of the floor opening to provide support and strength equivalent to other floor openings.(d) The opening, with doors open, shall be of sufficient width to allow the passage of a wheelchair. The minimum clear opening through the door and lift mechanism shall be 30 inches in width.(e) A drip molding shall be installed above the opening to effectively divert water from the entrance.(f) The entrance shall be of sufficient width and depth to accommodate various mechanical lifts and related accessories as well as the lifting platform.(g) On each school bus, door posts and headers from the entrance shall be sufficiently reinforced to provide support and strength equivalent to the areas of the side of the bus not used for entrance doors.N.H.
