Section Saf-C 1308.19 - Loading Lights
(a) Red signal lamps that flash alternately shall be mounted horizontally on the front and rear of each school bus, in order to identify that the school bus is receiving or discharging pupils. There shall be 2 red signal lamps on the front of the school bus and 2 on the rear of the school bus.
(b) Amber signal lamps that flash alternately shall be mounted horizontally on the front and rear of the school bus, in order to inform other motorists that the school bus is about to stop to receive or discharge pupils. One amber signal lamp shall be located inside and next to each red signal lamp, at the same level.
(c) Red and amber signal lamps shall be wired so that amber lamps are energized manually and red lamps are energized automatically, with the amber lamps automatically deenergized when the school bus entrance door is open. The amber warning light system shall be required on all school buses.
(d) The area around the lens of each alternately flashing signal lamp, extending outward approximately 3 inches, shall be painted black. If there is not a flat vertical portion of the body that immediately surrounds the entire lens of the lamp, a circular or square band of black, 3 inches wide, shall be painted on the body or roof area immediately below and by both sides of the lens, which shall be visible from a distance of 500 feet along the axis of the school bus. Visors or hoods with an appropriate black background to fit the shape of hoods shall also be used.
(e) All flashers, for alternately flashing red and amber signal lamps, shall be enclosed in the school bus body in an accessible location.
(f) Each school bus shall have a device that warns the driver when any of the 8-light warning system lamps are inoperative. The monitor shall be mounted in full view of the driver. If the full circuit passes through the monitor, each circuit shall be protected by a fuse or circuit breaker against any short circuit or intermittent shorts.
(g) Each school bus shall have a stop signal arm which shall:
(1) Be installed on the left outside of the body of the school bus;
(2) Comply with the requirements of Society of Engineers standard Jl133, 06/11;
(3) Be reflectorized;
(4) Be octagonal in shape with white letters and border and a red background;
(5) Have flashing lamps in the stop signal arm connected to the alternately red flashing signal lamp circuits; and
(6) Be vacuum, electric or air operated.
(h) All loading lights shall be incandescent, LED or red alternating strobe lights.
