Section Ed 507.36 - Classical Languages Teacher

The following requirements shall apply to the certification of a classical languages teacher:

(a) To be certified as a classical languages teacher, the candidate shall have at least a bachelor's degree.
(b) A candidate for certification as a classical languages teacher with an endorsement in Latin shall have the following skills, competencies and knowledge through a combination of academic experiences and demonstrated competency and equivalent experiences in the following areas:
(1) In the area of reading comprehension and translation, the candidate shall have the following abilities:
a. Ability to read the works of major Latin authors in prose and poetry;
b. Ability to translate Latin into idiomatic English; and
c. Ability to read aloud both prose and poetry in correct meter in Latin using an accepted standard of pronunciation;
(2) In the area of vocabulary, grammar, and syntax, the candidate shall have the following knowledge and abilities:
a. Knowledge of the morphology, phonology, and syntax of Latin;
b. Ability to write short compositions in Latin; and
c. Knowledge of:
1. The historical development of Latin; and
2. The place of Latin in the etymology of English words;
(3) In the area of the cultural and literary history of Greece and Rome, the candidate shall have the following knowledge:
a. Knowledge of major aspects of classical history, cultural institutions and their connections to the western tradition and other world cultures;
b. Knowledge of the history and content of classical literature, in translation or in the original; and
c. Knowledge of classical mythology; and
(4) In the area of pedagogy, the candidate shall have the following knowledge and abilities:
a. Ability to design and implement varied and lively teaching activities involving the language(s), including:
1. Reading;
2. Writing;
3. Reciting;
4. Listening; and
5. Speaking;
b. Knowledge of current teaching resources, including those in print and in technology; and
c. Knowledge of different teaching methods.
(c) A candidate for certification as a classical languages teacher with an endorsement in Greek shall comply with (b) above, except that the required skills, competencies and knowledge shall be in Greek instead of Latin.
