The major functions of the Laboratory Operations Branch of Materials Division include but are not limited to the following responsibilities. Detailed procedures related to the following duties of the Laboratory Operations Branch of Materials Division can be found in the current edition of Mississippi Department of Transportation's Materials Division Inspection, Testing, and Certification Manual.

1. In order to comply with the requirements set forth in Federal-Aid Policy Guide, 23 CFR 637 B as amended, the Laboratory Operations Branch tests materials incorporated into Department construction projects. Copies of the Code of Federal Regulations can be obtained by accessing www.gpoaccess.gov.
2. The Laboratory Operations Branch tests and reports samples submitted by representatives (County Engineers) of the Office of State Aid Road Construction and other Governmental agencies as authorized by the Executive Director of the Mississippi Department of Transportation.
3. Upon written request by private engineering firms through the State Materials Engineer, the Laboratory Operations Branch will check and certify laboratory technicians and laboratory equipment for projects funded through the Mississippi Department of Transportation.
4. The Laboratory Operations Branch conducts job control sampling and testing of materials incorporated into Department construction projects in order to comply with the requirements set forth in Federal-Aid Policy Guide, 23 CFR 637 B as amended. Copies of the Code of Federal Regulations can be obtained by accessing www.gpoaccess.gov.
5. The Laboratory Operations Branch sets uniform procedures for inspecting ready-mix concrete plants.
6. The Laboratory Operations Branch tests some materials for the purpose of approving the source (Source Approval) prior to inclusion into work for the Department. Provided the test results indicate that the material meets all of the requirements for the type material specified, the State Materials Engineer will approve the Source for use on Department projects.
