Section 20-2-V - OBSERVATION CARE DISCHARGE SERVICES (99217)A. CPT code 99217 is used only if discharge from observation status occurs on a date other than the initial date of observation. The code includes final examination of the patient, discussion of the hospital stay, instructions for continuing care, and preparation of discharge records. B. If a patient is admitted to and subsequently discharged from observation status on the same date, see codes 99234-99236 as appropriate. C. Do not report observation care discharge CPT code 99217 in conjunction with a hospital admission.
