Direct visual observation of all patients should be possible from a central vantage point, yet patients should have a reasonable amount of privacy. They should be sheltered as much as possible from the activity and noise of the unit by partitions, drapes and acoustic ceilings, but caution should be exercised in the use of carpeting and under carpet padding both as to fire resistance and potential production of toxic fumes in case of fire.
