The team approach is optimal in the care of the multiple injured pediatric patient. There must be identified members of the pediatric trauma team. Policies should be in place describing the respective role of all personnel on the pediatric trauma team. The composition of the pediatric trauma team will depend of the characteristics of the hospital and its staff. In some instances a tiered response may be appropriate. If a tiered response is employed written policy must be in place and the system monitored by the PI process. All physicians and/or mid-level providers on the pediatric trauma team responsible for directing the initial resuscitation of the pediatric trauma patient must be certified in The American College of Surgeons Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS). ATLS requirement is waived for Board Certified Emergency Medicine and Board Certified General Surgery physicians. A pediatric ED physician and pediatric general/trauma surgeon are required members of the team. Additional members may include:
