15 Miss. Code. R. 12-31-8.12.1

Current through December 10, 2024
Rule 15-12-31-8.12.1

Paramedics may routinely or periodically participate in patient care in the emergency department of a licensed hospital. Their presence may be in the form of:

1. graduates participating in a clinical rotation for skill retention.
2. field units stationed out of the emergency department under direct physician supervision (i.e., hospital-based ALS services). BEMS Certified Paramedics will be able to function in the emergency service area of the hospital. They would also be permitted to function in life-threatening emergency situations in other areas of the hospital if directed to do so by the medical command authority.
3. providing assistance to the emergency department staff after delivering a patient.

Paramedics must, when functioning in the hospital, only do so under the direct supervision of a physician. This is necessary because the scope of practice of a Paramedic does not coincide with that of any other licensed personnel. Paramedics of a hospital-owned and based ambulance service may function in the Emergency Department under the direct supervision of a Mississippi licensed physician, physically located in Mississippi, via telemedicine. Paramedics may not function in other areas of hospitals which do not have on-site 24-hour physician availability. #24685
