Section R. 400.15408 - Bedrooms generallyRule 408.
(1) A room shall not be used as a resident bedroom if more than 1/2 of the room height is below grade, except where the ceiling of such portion of a building is located 5 feet or more above grade for more than 25% of the perimeter measurement of the building. Such acceptable bedrooms shall be provided 2 acceptable means of egress.(2) A living room, dining room, hallway, or other room that is not ordinarily used for sleeping or a room that contains a required means of egress shall not be used for sleeping purposes by anyone.(3) Bedrooms for residents shall be separated from halls, corridors, and other rooms by floor-to-ceiling walls that do not have openings, except for doorways.(4) Interior doorways of bedrooms that are occupied by residents shall be equipped with a side-hinged, permanently mounted door that is equipped with positive-latching, non-locking-against-egress hardware.(5) Traffic to and from any room shall not be through a resident bedroom.(6) For 2 adjoining rooms to be considered as 1 bedroom, there shall be a 7-foot horizontal opening between the rooms.(7) Bedrooms shall have at least 1 easily openable window.(8) Residents of the opposite sex shall not occupy the same bedroom for sleeping purposes, unless they are husband and wife.(9) A resident who has impaired mobility shall not sleep in or be assigned a bedroom that is located above the street floor of the home.Mich.
