Section R. 408.16336 - Chains; cables; wire ropesRule 6336.
(1) A chain used for material handling and its component parts, other than alloy steel chain having a minimum tensile strength of 125,000 pounds per square inch, shall have a designed safety factor of not less than 5. Alloy chain shall not be used in excess of the working load in straight tension for its size as prescribed in Table 3 'Working Load.'(2) Chain with bent, twisted, or elongated links, or a hook that has been opened more than 15% at the throat from the original set or twisted more than 10% from the plane of the unbent hook, shall not be used until the defective links or hook is replaced.(3) Cable, wire rope, and wire rope slings shall have a designed safety factor of not less than 5.(4) Wire rope or cable shall be inspected when installed, and not less than monthly thereafter, when in use.(5) Wire rope shall not be used if, in any length of 8 diameters, the total number of visible broken wires exceeds 10% of the total number of wires, or if the rope shows other signs of excessive wear, corrosion, or defects.
