Section 144-118-8.B - Management of Inappropriate Client Behavior

The facility must develop and implement written policies and procedures that govern the management of inappropriate client behavior.

These policies and procedures must:

8.B.1. Be consistent with the provisions of conduct toward clients in this section;
8.B.2. Specify all facility approved interventions to manage inappropriate client behavior;
8.B.3. Designate these interventions on a hierarchy to be implemented, ranging from most positive or least intrusive, to least positive or most intrusive; and
8.B.4. Insure, prior to the use of more restrictive techniques, that the client's record documents that programs incorporating the use of less intrusive or more positive techniques have been tried systematically and demonstrated to be ineffective. Definition
8.B.5. Staff Members Who May Authorize the Use of Specified Interventions Any staff member who is involved in interventions used in the management of inappropriate client behaviors must have training and experience in:
a. Client rights;
b. Behavioral procedures in the field of mental retardation; and
c. The use of the specific behavioral intervention.
