Appendix 071-232-I - STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

Student organizations which provide for participation in local, state, regional, and/or national activities are a significant means of developing leadership skills and are an integral part of an occupational education curriculum. Student organizations provide a structure for developing leadership, building character, instilling a cooperative spirit and inspiring civic pride, responsibility, self-confidence, and public service. Employers have consistently confirmed that occupational competence requires positive attitudes, values, and initiative, in addition to technical skills.

Each education agency should provide to every student the opportunity for participation in student leadership development activities. All occupational education students should be provided the opportunity to participate in the educational activities of the students, organizations) which most directly relate(s) to their chosen instructional program. The occupational education student organizations recognized by the Bureau of Adult and Secondary Vocational Education and the U. S. Office of Education include:

Education America (DECA)

Business Education Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA)

Health Occupations Health Occupations Students of America

The payment of membership dues Is a voluntary act on the part of the student. However, dues may be required for participation in Local, regional, state, or national activities.
