Section 210 IAC 8-8-31 - Management of pharmaceuticals

Sec. 31.

(a) Written policy, procedure, and practice provide that management of pharmaceuticals and over-the-counter medications shall include the following:
(1) Prescription practices, including the following requirements:
(A) Medications are prescribed only when clinically indicated and with defined stop order time periods.
(B) Medications are prescribed as one (1) facet of a program of therapy.
(C) The prescribing provider reevaluates a prescription prior to its renewal.
(2) Procedures for:
(A) receiving;
(B) distributing;
(C) storing;
(D) administering; and
(E) disposing of; medication in accordance with state and federal law.
(3) Administration of medication by qualified health care professionals or health trained staff who have undergone training approved by the health care authority.
(4) Accountability for administering medications in a timely manner and according to the health care practitioner's order.
(5) Accountability for documenting medication administration, according to procedures approved by the health care authority.
(6) Secure storage and perpetual inventory of all:
(A) controlled substances;
(B) syringes; and
(C) needles.
(b) This is a mandatory standard.
