(a) Joint doctoral programs are partnerships between UC and CSU that build on the strengths of each of the participating campuses to generate specialized programs that could not otherwise be realized. Joint doctorate programs benefit both systems, the students, and the State.(b) These joint doctoral programs are independent of UC doctoral programs pursuant to Education Code Section 66010.4 for UC doctoral degrees and independent of CSU professional and applied doctoral degrees pursuant to Education Code Section 66046).(c) Certain basic principles underlie all joint doctoral programs:(1) Joint doctoral degrees are awarded jointly by the Trustees of the California State University and the Regents of the University of California.(2) In the development and operation of joint doctoral programs the CSU and the UC partners have equal status(3) All program decisions are made jointly and by mutual agreement between participating UC and CSU campuses(4) The programs respond to a societal need that is best met by members of the faculties from both systems, calls on the expertise of both, and cannot be met by existing programs(5) By combining the intellectual and physical resources of the two systems, the joint degree programs can provide opportunities for research collaborations(d) CSU and UC faculty shall follow mutually agreed protocols for the planning, reviewing, and implementation of joint doctoral programs.Cal.
